Salmela builds Wisconsin residence in four separate phases over time

David Salmela has completed many projects in the state of Wisconsin. He has also built a home that has a courtyard framed by a sauna separated from the house and a rustic dwelling made of stacked boxes with dark grey wood walls.

Contemporary Architecture by Horst Architects

Horst Architects, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Horst Noppenberger, AIA and is based in Laguna Beach, California. The practice has evolved into a multi-disciplinary group producing work which bridges technology with cultural and environmental awareness. Our approach to design affirms the possibility of fulfilling the rigorous requirements of the client while engaging in a spirited and robust dialogue with the site.

The work explores the contrapuntal aspect of human nature through the creation of space which is both sheltering and expansive, communal and intimate, permanent and ephemeral. Each project celebrates the unique aspect of program, client and site to arrive at design solutions which are original and distinctive. We adhere to the principal ethos of modernism, to strip away the extraneous and be somewhat reductive. This approach leads to a poetics of space, characterized by the sculptural interplay of light, material and form.

The work of Horst Architects, Inc. has been published in World Architecture, Ville Giardini, Vogue, Luxe and Interiors. Recent projects have been featured in the Art and Architecture Home Tour, cosponsored by the Orange County Museum of Art and the American Institute of Architects.

COMMERCIAL // SUPERCAR WORKSHOP

We were invited to design and deliver the refurbishment of a derelict workshop building in Hampshire to provide a headquarters for a British automotive company specialising in the servicing, restoration and racing of both modern and historic cars.

The clean and muted environment of the workshop provides a calm backdrop for the colourful array of supercars. Storage and parts are positioned on raised mezzanine areas to the side leaving a large double height area in the centre. A metal stair with cantilevered treads leads up to a break-out area at first floor, overlooking the workshop through a veil of timber louvers.

Zinc House by OB Architecture

Zinc House is a project designed by OB Architecture. We were given the kind of brief most young aspiring practices dream of: to design a contemporary house in a wonderful location overlooking the sea.
